The technology sector continues to lead the way for fleet sustainability in Europe, topping a list compiled by ALD Automotive | LeasePlan for the third year in a row.
Eight industry fleets across 22 European countries were ranked in the Fleet Sustainability Ranking by Industry report, based on the share of diesel, the share of battery electric vehicles (BEVs), the share of hybrids, and the average grams of CO2 emissions per km.
Technology firms were found to have the lowest average CO2 emissions and the lowest share of diesel, combined with the second-highest share of BEVs, hybrids and PHEVs.
The financial and professional services sector, and energy and chemicals sector were second and third in the table. They scored consistently high across the categories, as they have done in previous years.
The automotive sector (defined as companies operating in the vehicle-development supply chain including OEMs and aftermarket companies but excluding rental) slipped from fourth in the table in 2022 to fifth this year. The sector performed poorly for its BEV share and average CO2 emissions. However, automotive is still up from sixth place overall in 2021’s listing.
EV adoption more than doubles
The adoption of electric vehicles has more than doubled over the past two years across every industry. In the energy and chemicals industry, which has the highest share of BEVs, one in four vehicles (27.2%) is now fully electric.
Meanwhile, the share of PHEVs and hybrids has mostly flattened across all industries, and diesel share has halved.
Average CO2 emissions have also dropped across all industries. The largest decrease is seen in the top-ranking industries, with the technology industry going from an average of 110g/km in 2020 to 83g/km in 2022.
Even the industry that came last in the ranking (healthcare and pharma) has decreased, going from 117.6 g/km in 2020 to 102.2 g/km in 2022.
UK overtakes the Netherlands as EV frontrunner
In the technology sector, the UK has surpassed the Netherlands as the EV frontrunner, with a 59% share of battery electric vehicles in 2022.
Since 2020, in the technology sector, the UK has seen the largest increase in BEV share, with a 36% increase.
From the 2023 findings, the UK tech sector (alongside Sweden) has the lowest average CO2 emission (26.7g/km).
It’s encouraging to see such healthy progress being made across Europe as businesses come together to tackle the climate crisis and industry-related carbon emissions. I would particularly like to commend those working within the technology industry for stepping onto the global stage as a leading player in decarbonising fleet emissions through EV adoption.
As an EV100 founding member, ALD Automotive | LeasePlan is committed to accelerating the rollout of electric driving across all industries. It is our mission to support all fleet-operating businesses with their transition towards more sustainable mobility solutions.
