WITH winter fading and the Easter Weekend approaching, it’s easy for fleet drivers to relax into the new season, but spring presents its own driving challenges. From lingering winter hazards to unpredictable weather, being prepared for the UK’s changeable weather patterns is always critical. Here’s how to ensure your spring journeys are safe and efficient:
Shake Off the Winter Blues: Prep Your Vehicle
- De-Grime: Winter salt and dirt impact visibility and can accelerate wear and tear. Give your vehicle a thorough scrub, inside and out.
- Tyre Check: Optimal tyre pressure and tread depth are crucial for wet weather driving. Inspect for wear and adjust pressure as needed.
- Fluid Fundamentals: Ensure your oil, screen wash, and coolant are at appropriate levels for smooth operation.
- Wipe Away the Rain: Don’t let malfunctioning windscreen wipers or a cracked windscreen jeopardise your visibility in spring showers. Inspect both your wiper blades for wear or cracks and your windscreen for any damage. Replace as needed for optimal safety.
- Light the Way: Visibility is paramount. Test all lights (headlights, brake lights, indicators). If you have a bulb that is not working, get it replaced – contact your fleet manager for advice. Or use your maintenance agreement if you have that with your lease.
Spring Weather Surprises: Adapt Your Driving
- Slow and Steady: Slick roads are common in spring, so reduce your speed and avoid sudden manoeuvres.
- Watch for Wildlife: Animals are more active in warmer weather. Be alert, especially at dawn and dusk.
- Sun Smart: Glare can be disorienting. Keep sunglasses handy, and use your sun visor when needed.
- The Hay Fever Factor: If you suffer from allergies, keep antihistamines on hand, but be sure to use the non-drowsy kind.
Plan for a Smooth Ride
- Long Distance Driving: Schedule regular breaks to combat fatigue.
- Know Before You Go: Check the latest traffic reports and plan your route for any closures or diversions.
“Safety First” is Always the Motto
Spring may bring lighter days and the promise of holidays, but responsible fleet drivers understand that safe practices never take a break. By adopting these tips and staying mindful of changing conditions, you’ll help protect yourself, your vehicle, and others on the road.
