Say hello to…
…the Volkswagen ID7, is the German firm’s all-electric executive hatchback. A few millimetres longer than a Passat, the ID7 is powered by a 286hp motor driving the rear wheels and with an official range of 383 miles from the 77kWh battery.
VW is keeping the range ultra-simple with just one highly-equipped version of the car now available, the Pro Match.
Standard equipment includes three-zone climate control, keyless and entry (on all doors), adaptive cruise control, parking sensors front and rear, surround view camera, 19-inch alloys, LED headlights, heated steering wheel, heated and massage front seats, powered front seats with memory, 15-inch infotainment screen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, 4x USB sockets and wireless charging.
Is The Volkswagen ID7 Suitable For My Fleet
If it weren’t using the latest battery tech, you’d almost consider the ID7 an old-school company car in its proportions and suitability to carry five and luggage on long motorway journeys.
Maximum charging speed is 175kW, which may not be quite the best in sector, but it’s more than enough for most. The official range is an impressive 383 miles, too. However, in cool (but not cold) weather we saw a real-world range of 285 miles with the majority at motorway speeds. Warmer weather could easily see the figure rise above 300 miles.
Leasing A Volkswagen ID7
VW has read the market well with the ID7 pricing and positioning. The P11d value is £51,495 and extremely competitive. Intelligent Car Leasing is offering the ID7 for £680 a month on a 3+36 contract with 20,000 miles a year. Gensen Reports forecasts monthly maintenance costs on the same basis at £63 and Class 1A NIC comes in at £14 a month.
Driving A Volkswagen ID7
Volkswagen is clearly learning as it goes with the introduction of the ID range of pure electric cars and as a result, the ID7 is the best so far.
The ID7 is also the largest and most luxurious in the ID range. While the exterior styling may be slightly anonymous, it is classy and quite ‘VW’. Little touches, like keyless entry that works on the rear door handles are a good sign of the high specification and quality that you see when you sit inside the cabin.
Interior materials continue that quality feel and there’s nothing missing from the equipment list.
Where the early IDs had unintuitive infotainment systems that were buggy and laggy, the ID7’s system, while clearly from the same origins, is heaps better than anything that has (in ID terms) come before. It’s not perfect, but the infotainment system is no longer an annoying detraction from the car.
On the move, the ID7 is quiet, refined and easy to drive. The large proportions (the ID7 is nearly 5m long), aren’t a worry, with the car easy to position and judge through gaps or when parking.
Ride comfort is on the firm side, which is fine, but feels fractionally out of character with the rest of the car. However, the ultra-comfy seats make up for an occasionally jarring over the UK’s sometimes unavoidable potholes.
With nearly 300hp, rear wheel drive and a weight of more than 2,600kg, the ID7’s traction and stability control systems can find themselves working harder than expected to keep the car doing what the driver wants – particularly in the cold and wet – when cornering or exiting roundabouts.
However, the overall ease of use and refinement for motorway work is outstanding and if you’re after an EV to cover higher miles, the ID7 is an appealing option at an attractive price.
