Is The MG IM5 Suitable For My Fleet
Benchmarking the Tesla Model 3 and then making something better, means the MG IM5 is totally suited to fleet use. And the IM5 100, with the longest range, is the most suitable within the three-version line-up.

Driving An MG IM5
The easiest way to understand the MG IM5 is to think of it as a Tesla Model 3 that’s been improved for everyday driving. It delivers the same effortless electric performance, but with a more premium feel and fewer compromises.
The first impression is of quality. The cabin feels more spacious than the Tesla’s, while the materials have a noticeably more upmarket look and feel. It also benefits from Apple CarPlay, something many drivers will appreciate and which remains a notable omission from the Model 3.
On the move, the IM5 strikes a different balance. Its suspension is softer and more compliant than Tesla’s, soaking up poor road surfaces with impressive composure and making long motorway journeys particularly relaxing. Keen drivers may find it gives away a little body control on twisting B-roads, where the softer set-up feels less engaging than the Model 3, but for the majority of fleet users it is a worthwhile trade-off.
Performance is never in doubt. Switch into Sport mode and the IM5 accelerates with the kind of force expected from a powerful modern EV. It’s entertaining enough to raise a smile, but in reality Comfort mode is where the car feels most at home, delivering smooth, effortless progress that suits everyday commuting and business mileage.
The 100kWh battery also inspires confidence on longer trips. During our test the car returned 3.6 miles per kWh, equating to a real-world range of 360 miles. While the car displayed an optimistic 418 miles when fully charged, drivers should comfortably expect well over 300 miles in normal mixed driving.
MG has also done an excellent job with the user interface. The system boots up almost instantly, the touchscreen responds quickly to inputs and the menus are logically arranged. Even better, it is refreshingly straightforward to adjust or disable the more intrusive ADAS warning systems before setting off. The brakes deserve praise too, offering a reassuringly progressive pedal feel that’s often missing from regenerative braking systems.
There are, however, a couple of frustrations. Rear visibility is particularly poor thanks to an exceptionally shallow rear window, leaving drivers heavily reliant on the camera systems when reversing or changing lanes.
The digital driver’s display also feels as though it has been designed by geeks rather than drivers. Much of the screen is dedicated to displaying what the car’s sensors can detect around you, while genuinely useful information is pushed to the margins. The speedo sits off to the left, while the remaining range is reduced to a tiny figure at the bottom of the display. It seems an odd prioritisation when the information drivers check most frequently is given less prominence than graphics showing a world they can already see through the windscreen.
