Driving A BYD Atto 2
The Atto 2 DM-i impresses in several key areas, particularly ride comfort. The suspension does a commendable job of absorbing poor road surfaces, giving the car a composed and refined feel that suits its family-focused brief. Handling is also more than competent, with good body control and a reassuring sense of stability through bends.
Light steering makes the Atto 2 easy to manoeuvre around town, while remaining precise enough to inspire confidence at higher speeds. Visibility is generally very good, helped by a relatively high driving position for a car in this class that gives drivers a commanding view of the road ahead.
The biggest dynamic weakness comes from the brakes, which are overly sensitive at low speeds. Even gentle inputs can result in sharper-than-expected deceleration, making smooth parking manoeuvres and stop-start driving harder than they should be.
Like many modern Chinese-built cars, the Atto 2 is fitted with a comprehensive suite of driver assistance systems. However, drivers who prefer a less interventionist experience may find themselves spending time navigating menus to disable features such as lane keeping assistance, driver monitoring alerts and speed warnings.
The digital driver’s display also prioritises volume of content over clarity. It presents a vast amount of information (including tyre pressures and temperatures plus driver assistance graphics) but the most important data, such as vehicle speed and the current speed limit, is displayed relatively small within the screen. It’s a curious design decision that can make key information harder to read at a glance than it needs to be.
Overall, though, the Atto 2 DM-i delivers a comfortable and easy-going driving experience. Its blend of ride comfort, light controls and good visibility makes it well suited to everyday commuting and family duties, even if some of its technology and brake calibration could benefit from further refinement.
