ITALIAN tyre maker Pirelli has demonstrated the world’s first fully connected 5G tyre.
Called the Cyber Tyre, sensors fitted inside it were able to transmit road conditions – and the risk of aquaplaning – to following cars as well as the surrounding area.
The demonstration was held in Turin, Italy, as part of a live event showcasing Cellular-Vehicle-to-Everything (C-V2X) technology.
Pirelli says that in future the Cyber Tyre will be able to supply the car with data relative to the tyre model, number of miles driven, dynamic load and potential road surface dangers, ranging from the presence of water to poor grip conditions.
With this data, the car will be able to adapt its control and driving assistance systems, enhancing safety levels, comfort and performance. The car will also broadcast the same data to other cars and the infrastructure in the vicinity.
The tyre maker partnered with Ericsson, Audi, Tim, Italdesign and KTH in the programme.
The event was organised by the 5G Automotive Association (5GAA) to showcase future products. Main picture courtesy of 5GAA.
