WELL, now, here’s a thing. You could go right retro but bring your classic up to date with an electric motor.
A bit like A series to Z series (for zero emissions).
But it’s all been made possible by the MINI Recharged project: this converts a classic Mini to a battery charged go-kart.
And to keep the sustainability narrative going, the original A-series engine and drivetrain is marked and stored so it can be reused in the event of a future retrofit of the classic Mini.
In its place a 90kW electric motor powers the car to 62mph in nine seconds. The original Cooper S took 10.5 seconds, by the way. It will be good for a range of 99 miles.
It would certainly make the Mini usable in CAZs and the London ULEZ. There would also be no road tax.
If you have it as a company car, there would be some benefit in kind company car tax to pay. But it’s hard to know if this would be payable as a classic car on engine size or as a zero emission vehicle.
Either way, you’ll have a brilliant classic car originally designed to save fuel during the oil crisis given a thoroughly modern makeover.
The MINI Recharged programme is carried out in the UK and each vehicle is given a unique number.
MINI has not announced what the cost of conversion will be.
