Two Oxford University professors have taken a significant lead in the development of autonomous vehicle software, through evolving a robotics start-up business. Industry experts say autonomous driving on motorways could be possible by the middle of this decade.
The university spin-off, Oxbotica, has just raised $47 million (£42.3 million) from investors across the globe to fund the commercial world-wide deployment of its software platform.
Founded in 2014 by, Paul Newman and Ingmar Posne, Oxboticar has grown from a UK robotics start-up to one of the world’s leading autonomy software development companies.

Oxbotica’s product is a software platform providing universal autonomy. The company claims it is fast to deploy, low energy, hassle free, hardware agnostic and applicable to a wide range of vehicles for both on and off road use. While the company claims the software can be used by any vehicle in any place, the focus initially is on taxis and freight vehicles, as this is the fastest route to profitability
High-calibre global investors in the round included BGF, bp ventures, Halma, HostPlus, IP Group, Tencent, Venture Science, along with financial and strategic investors from Australia, China, UK and the USA.
